I grew up a brunette and wanted to blonde ever since I was in high school. My mom always told me that it was too hard to upkeep and so I never tried it. Well I had a quarter life crisis this year and took the big jump and went blonde. I would definitely go in with realistic expectations. If you have dark hair it is going to take a few trips to get you to the color you want. This was the process for me.

Trip 1
I went in and my hair colorist Brooke, who I extensively reviewed assessed me hair and the pigment it had in it. First she tried to lift all the pigment to see how light it would go. We made the decision to highlight it in with my natural hair so that I wasn’t super shocked and afraid of what blonde would look like. I also did not want platinum blonde, I wanted an ashy blonde that we would get lighter and lighter with each visit. After my first appointment with her my hair was super chunky and I wasn’t a huge fan. So I told her I was 100% committed to blonde so we made a second appointment a few weeks later to take the plunge.

You say it’s just a hair color change, I say it’s life changing.
Trip 2
During this trip she did the same thing but she lighted everything even more and weaved it all over instead of half(just highlights). After this visit it was easier to lift my hair and by the end of the visit I felt like a blonde princess. I was SO EXCITED. Like my dreams came true and I was squealing.

Final Thoughts
Honestly made me feel more confident and excited to do my hair. Do you know how oblivious men are to highlights? Well the next day at work EVERYONE was like “did you do something different?”. It was exciting. My husband loves it and I’m so glad he thinks it’s pretty. He’s seen my hair color when it was blackish, brown and now blonde haha!
Through this process I have become friends with my stylist and she’s honestly amazing at her job. I will ONLY go to her as long as I live here. It’s at an Aveda Salon but she’s the most requested lady. I trust her with my life. I used to use bow dyes but it made my scalp burn and I don’t trust myself to try to bleach my own hair. I have read too many stories about girls hair falling out. So I saved up for it.
It took my two trips to get to the hair color I wanted and I’ve been back since for touch ups. Go in knowing that you will initially probably pay a little less than $350 for your first two appointments. Pricing depends on how long your hair is and what color it is prior. If my hair was black it would have been way more money. So just be prepared!
You also need to decide between a weave or all over color.
- A weave integrates your natural hair color, highlights and your desired hair color so that when the roots start to grow out it doesn’t look as crazy. This let’s you go to the salon less and saves you money in the long run.
- All over color is when you dye the whole head one flat color, if you want dimension you have to get highlights on top of that and that cost even more.
So being semi frugal a college student that I was, I picked weave to save some money while still getting the blonde I have been craving. So are you going to go blonde?? Feel free to ask any questions!
